Makerere University, Pearl View hostel students yesterday said, they will not continue staying in an environment with poor sanitation.
Elabu Emmanuel,The Guild Health Minister, said despite their petition to the hostel custodian and administrators to repair the sewage pipes, toilet and water pipes, there had been no response.

“The sanitation at the hostel is very poor. Sewage is everywhere. It’s worse in the compound, near the reading rooms and the canteen. Sometimes students forego sleeping in their hostel rooms because the smell is awful,” he said.

His sentiments were re-echoed by James Ouma, a resident at pearl view hostel, “we pay hostel fees. In fact, you cannot enter or sleep in his hostel unless you have completed all the hostel dues. But the money we pay does not match the services we are offered.”
“Every time we raise our issues, we are informed that we should mind studies only. We are tired of pushing the custodians to do what they are supposed to do,” he said.

However, the hostel custodian Micheal Ssegirinya said, preparations are going on to repair sewage system by the end of this semester
“We are trying everything possible to draw the waste, but we have been delayed by national water and sewerage corporation workers who keep on postponing our appointments with them.”
Sewage pipes have been blocked and filth flows freely from the compound and reading rooms to the main road near Nana hostel.
The hostel smells awful and students cannot even bring visitors to their rooms because of the poor sanitation around the place.
